Aprons, Beads and things.....

Or whatever....this has been a very eclectic week, even for me! Sewing, painting, scrapbooking - a multi media week for sure. So to start a layout:

I have been so inspired by Taking Flight by Kelly Rae Roberts and playing with some mixed media background and used this one for this layout. Her book is fabulous - you should definitely read it if you get the chance. Great step-by-step techniques, too.

Then sewing - my mom came over Wednesday afternoon and we made 3, yes 3 aprons! She took hers home before I got a photo but here are mine and Em's - we match of course. ;)

And a close-up of the cute retro fabric: It is called Peas and Carrots - too cute!

Then, paper beads - Gayle and Nan came over and helped me mess up the studio making these - they look so much prettier in real life - just rolled paper beads dipped in UTEE and wrapped with fiber and micro beads and more UTEE - SO FUN!!!!

I played with Photo Shop this week with this magical picture that I took at the bridal shop last week when we went shopping for flower girl dresses. This isn't the dress we got, but I loved the red bow!!! You will be seeing it again in a layout I am sure!

And last, but certainly not least - I have a layout in this issue of Memories! A mixed media painted background layout that I called - Dance.

So, I think cleaning out my studio was kind of good for the mojo! I am also playing with some mixed media paintings that I'll share next week. My brain is overflowing with ideas right now! Gotta run!! See you all soon and thanks for visiting me!

Did that title catch your eye? My friend, Audrey demonstrated how to make these dimensional ATCs in her article in Somerset Workshop so I had to make some, too. Mine are layered with stamped tissue paper and wax.

I used some photos of my dad's parents when they were young - I have a postcard my grandpa sent to my grandma when he was in the Navy during WWII. I copied it and used it on the side of one of the chunkies. Weren't they so beautiful and young?

This chunky is of my dad and his brothers - he is the youngest - the 2nd from the left. I used some ink to stain the wood and then darkened the edges with a contrasting color - the title is 'boys like flowers too'.

My studio is still looking pretty good - Nan and Gayle came over and helped me mess it up yesterday. ;) We worked on some paper beads that you dip into UTEE and glitter and fibers and mess! Lots of fun!! I am going to do a technique project with the beads for our Altered Minds group and needed to work out the kinks. I'll share some photos later - for now they are in my flickr if you want to see.
Been scrapping, too! Just finished up my Scrapmuse projects for next month - I'll share some sneaks later on.
Thanks so much for the comments on the studio overhaul!! You all made my week!! Happy creating and see you soon!

What a relief.....

Yay!! I am finally finished!! So here it is!! You have all been patiently bearing along with my complaints of my mess, so I wanted to share with you some before and after shots of my studio.

The BEFORE: Warning......Dangerous to view. I am a little embarrassed to post these first pictures. *blushing*

OK, a total disaster, I know.....AND NOW..........after 3 weeks of hard labor!!

My patterned paper is in the rolling carts under the table - organized by color. The rolling drawers are my embellishments also sorted by color.

My find at a used furniture store!! The perfect solution of display and storage! Please note the buttons and flowers all sorted by color! lol

I am going to make some tags to hang on the storage containers for easy access.

A separate table for my sewing so that I don't have to worry about cleaning off the paper first or Em spilling her watercolors across the table.

Well, I think it was worth it! Now to keep it in some semblance of order. Those of you that know me are probably laughing right now. ;D I am the messiest person so maybe that explains why I am so excited!

Sunday, January 18, 2009 myself...

As a lot of people have probably noticed there is a design team call going on at Bad Girls. As I debated trying out (lol), I set myself a challenge with their new January kit. To make 4 layouts in a quick turn around - I received my kit on Wednesday afternoon and finished these up Friday morning. Also to do some multi-photo and not all of only Emma! Here are my results - I also made them in mind to play with a couple of challenge sites that I like.

One of me and Em - I added some silver paint and pen work to accent - love the buttons and flowers that came with the kit!

Embrace is the word at One Little Word this week. I misted a piece of stripped cardboard with coffee Tattered Angels and painted on some swirls and gold highlights.

So loving playing with the Tim Holtz grungeboard in the kit!! I have used distress embossing powder, crackle paint and glimmer mist on this one. Also played with some paper pleating that I inserted and stitched down. I masked the ferns in the background by using the negative grungeboard after I punched out the large fern - turned out pretty cool, I think! Masking was the technique at Method Playground.

Scrapping the Music - Can I just say how inspiring it is to work from a song! This week the song is Pictures of You by The Last Goodnight - I immediately thought of this photo - especially with the lyrics 'pictures of you, pictures of me, remind us all of how we used to be.' Kind of bittersweet in a way but I love to remember when my family was all together and how happy we were. The hinges lift to reveal the journaling.

I know you are sick of this, I know I am, but the orgainzing is still ongoing!! But I am almost finished!! Yay!! So, back to work! Have a great week!! Happy Crafting! :)

My Colors....

I posted a peek of my other layouts I created for Scrapmuse this month where I added one color to each black and white layout. Today was the reveal and the newsletter is out! Guess who is the featured member spotlight? Yours truly! If you want to read about me and see all of the great organizational tips and layouts from the other DT members go here. My article on black and white is there, too.

This has to be my favorite photo of me and Em. The edge of the blue paper is a Martha Stewart punch.

I used the CI paper as a mask and a mist I made from a re-inker -I think it is plum by Ranger. And sprayed some of my scraps to punch these little flowers.

And one with paint - you know that is my favorite thing, lately. I even painted behind the transparency that is revealed in the tears. This is an older photo of Em, obviously. ;)

OK, she looks way TOO old here!! Pretending she is a model. I love the way the yellow pops.

And a close-up to show the dimension on this one:

And I know you are sick of hearing this, but I am still organizing. lol I am finally seeing an end in sight! Yesterday I found a great old buffet-china cabinet that will fit perfectly behind my desk!! Mark is going to pick it up tomorrow - so that now there will be no excuse - he says. LOL

I have been really creative this week - just finishing my 6th layout for this week!! Yay! I can't tell you what a relief it is to be able to finish a project and move on. I used to agonize over every detail and now I guess I am more confident in my style and just try to go with it. It's only paper! :) Hope you are all having a creative week! See ya!

Scrapping again...

The progress in my room had to take a back seat for a couple of days so I could play along with a couple of challenges. ;) The sorting is still ongoing - and flowers, buttons, embellishments and paper are now organized by color. Yay!!! What is left you might wonder? A LOT!

One at Bad Girls - Wendy started a 72 hour challenge. I combined it with the January challenge at Websters. The photo doesn't take center stage here because I wanted to make the resolution the most important. Loving that Tim Holtz clock mask!!

This one is for Color Combos and Pencillies 117, two of my faves for inspiration. Emma loves band-aids, she thinks they are a fashion accessory. lol I used my new Slice to cut the scalloped circles! Fun!!

Hope you are all having a great week! See you soon! :)

Some new mixed media

I have been feverishly working on some pieces to submit to Sew Somerset by the deadline this month. (along with the major overhaul in my studio) Do you ever feel like you can't stop your brain? Overdrive! lol I think it might be actually called AAD? But anyway, here they are - I am really proud of this little set! I am hoping Somerset will like them, too and offer me another technique article. Sorry for the poor photo quality, the light just wasn't right this morning - I had to get these early before I mailed them out.
Just a brief overview of the techniques I used: my theme - techniques and similar materials and a childhood remembered theme, painted fabric - I painted on a piece of canvas with layers of acrylic paint and stamps and used selections of this in every piece, stitching on cardboard and photos printed on transparencys. All in all - tons of fun!! :)

Otherwise, not much going on with me, just trying to finish up my cleaning - hopefully I will have some pictures to post soon. ;) I bought a ladder bookcase at Lowes this weekend to have some decorative storage and a place to display my work.

Also wanted to thank everyone for you comments about the CMK DT call. I hope that I don't sound like a whiner. I have been really impressed with what I saw on a friends blog regarding leaving a DT - she spoke of sharing good and bad, success and failures. That really spoke to me as I feel the same way. I so appreciate all of your comments and it makes me feel good that you care enough to support me!! So thank you!! Hope everyone had a great weekend! See you soon!

Art Journal and still organizing....

I started my art journal this week. This is something I have wanted to do for a long time and now feel a real need for - I have been so inspired by Somerset's new pub - Art Journals - if you get the chance to look at it, I think you will be, too!

My journal is made from 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of watercolor paper and I will sew the pages into a old book binding as I go - kind of like what Robin Marie Smith does with her journals.

So, here are the first pages - I am not sure if I will always share all of them, as some may be really personal. I used the prompts from OLW and Scrapping the Music to create these.

I used glimmer mists and masking on this and some golden fluid acrylic with a piece of mesh - and shaded with charcoal on this page where I used the word prompt from OLW - Start.

On this page I collaged some torn book pages with watered down PVA glue then washed with my faves - Golden Fluid Acrylics - I used gesso mixed with a little color and a foam stamp for the dots. The song from Scrapping the music was Hands by Jewel and I journaled the lyrics highlighting the ones I wanted to accent. On the side is some Kaffe fabric and some pic of me that Em took.
On another note - I didn't make the DT at CMK - but congrats to the ladies who did. It is hard not to take these things personally but I know Lisa picked the best team for her. So big Congrats to the new team! I am looking forward to being inspired!! And there is always next time! :)

I am still working on the DISASTER! lol No, seriously, I need to get that wrapped up so I can scrap soon!! I decided to arrange by color - with drawers by color for embellishments - little jars for flowers and buttons and paper by color - that is how I create anyway so I hope it works for me. I will post some pictures when I get it finished. (If that ever happens!) I think I need to purge more........Talk to you soon!!

Contests and other crafty endeavors..

We are having a fun contest this month at Scrapmuse - the challenge is to combine products from all of your kits from 2008 and create a layout. You can see the details here. Here is my take on the challenge:

And a close-up of my background showing the texture from collaging the papers onto canvas, then shading with charcoal and some machine stitching.

My other crafty passion - quilting - Kaffe Fassett is my favorite fabric and quilt designer! A quilt like this one was on the cover of one of his books - I made my own version only in a smaller scale - I am using it over a sideboard table between my kitchen and dining room - it looks lovely there! This is a photo of my quilt:

And a little toot - I got layout of the week at AMM with my Life is in the Details layout! You can see the blog post about me here:

Also, I have been trying, with trying being the key word, to organize my studio this weekend. Em, Mom and I went to Gainesville to try to find some decorative storage stuff and I have torn into everything to purge and organize! Oh, boy! Let me tell you, DISASTER OF EPIC PROPORTIONS!! Hopefully, I will find my way out of this mess soon. Any tips would be greatly appreciated, seeing as that gene is missing from my DNA. ;D

Have a fabulous and creative week!! I'll be by to check in with everyone soon!

January Peeks and Preview

January at Scrapmuse is all about black and white - fresh and clean, bright and new. Traci's challenge to us was to do one layout that was only b&w - and the others to add one color to each layout. It was surprisingly freeing to work in such a limited color palette - I put together some little sneaks to show you what colors I chose to work with:

Here is the kit preview:

And my b&w layout - This is an older photo of Em at Orange Beach last fall.

So, how has your new year started? I enjoyed going around to every one's blogs and reading about your thoughts for 2009. One trend I noticed is positive thinking and organization - both of those are on my list, organization especially. And I have been creating everyday - of course, it is only the 2nd! ;D

Best wishes to you all in the coming year!! Happy Creating!
